Interactive Learning for Operations Analytics Topics (ILOAT) Learning Object

Project Description: An interactive online tutorial learning object for MITB students to learn, self-assess and apply their knowledge and understanding of “Capacity Planning” and “Workforce Planning and Scheduling” in a hospital setting through simulations, computations and decision-making. The “Capacity Planning” storyline relates to the planning of hospital beds in Singapore, while the “Workforce Planning & Scheduling” storyline relates to planning and scheduling of ambulance drivers for a hospital.

Students will learn the related theories and concepts, then apply them to carry out the tasks by performing computations using downloadable Excel files, and entering the decisions based on their computations. Depending on the decisions that students input, there will be different outcomes.

Motivation: Instructor would like to develop an interactive tool which guides students in the process of capacity planning and workforce planning and allows for an engaging, self-paced learning experience.

Deliverables / Outcomes: This is an online tutorial learning object created for self-paced learning. Instructors can also run the activity in class and solicit decision inputs from students during discussion. This application can also be used in any operations management course which covers the aforementioned two topics.
