Our students will build careers in a world where AI is pervasive. SMU’s response is not simply to manage that reality, but to prepare graduates who can navigate it with both competence and judgement.
SMU’s graduate vision is anchored by three commitments. First, to protect core competencies: learners must be able to demonstrate competencies independent of AI. These include critical thinking, independent reasoning, disciplinary understanding, and communication skills. Second, to develop new AI capabilities, with learners being able to apply AI responsibly, effectively and fluently. Third, to strengthen human value-add: learners must be able to demonstrate and articulate what only they can bring, including professional and ethical judgement, collaboration, and creativity.
