Project Description
Scan or Dig is a single-player game and simulation developed for the Decision Analytics course to teach concepts of Decision Trees. In this interactive game, students take on the role of miners who need to make decisions on where to dig, how much to invest in research, mining tools, and the depth of their excavation. The objective of the project is to enable students to define what a Decision Tree is and its purpose in making business decisions. Students will be able to interpret Decision Tree results, including making predictions, identifying important decision points, and applying these insights to real-world scenarios.
Teaching Strategy
Scan or Dig is played in class, where students first go through a brief in-game tutorial explaining the game mechanics. They then engage in a Class-Mode game, allowing them to compare their scores against one another in class. At the end of the game, a summary screen displays a decision tree that outlines the decisions made. The instructor can use this decision tree to debrief specific course concepts. Additionally, students can challenge themselves further with the Random-Mode, which features more varied mine types.
