SMU Graduate Learning Outcomes (GLO)-based Rubrics
General Guidelines
A workgroup consisting of members from the six Schools, the Office of Core Curriculum, Centre for English Communication, Centre for Teaching Excellence, Office of the Dean of Students, and the Office of the Provost developed rubrics and feedback for students using an evidence-based approach. They reviewed similar work from other leading institutions and agreed on performance standards to adopt. The group also decided to use a common 6-level scale, noting that most students would fall within four or five levels, while the extreme levels would apply to rare cases of exceptionally poor or outstanding performance.
Each rubric outlines key components for assessing each GLO. These components are flexible; instructors can select and modify those most relevant to their courses.
It is recommended that instructors integrate GLO measurement into the assessment of Course Learning Outcomes, rather than creating separate assessments. For example, the “concept application” rubric under Critical Thinking and Problem Solving can be used when grading essay papers. Instructors teaching SMU-X courses might also consider using rubrics like “Problem Finding and Definition” and “Solution Testing, Implementation & Iteration” as part of their grading process.
